Do Windshields have UV Protection?

This has been a frequently asked question lately:

Do windshields have UV protection?

The answer is both yes, and no. A windshield is made from a laminate glass, which consists of 2 pieces of curved glass that have a plastic layer between them for safety. Since UVB rays (which cause sunburn) can’t penetrate through glass and/or plastic, they are stopped right away, due to their short wave lengths. However, UVA rays (photoaging rays) are still able to penetrate through the glass and the plastic, because of their long wavelengths. UVA rays also penetrate the skin deeper causing more long-term damage.

Windshields will filter out all UVB rays and only about 10-15% of the UVA rays.

If you are looking for protection in your windshield from both the UVA and UVB rays, then you need to apply a UV film. This film blocks out 99.9% of both the UVA and UVB rays when applied to the windshield.

Due to Minnesota’s law….

***UV Film can only be applied to the windshield if you have a prescription from your doctor regarding your medical condition.
